An Uptown man was arrested Friday for breaking into a U of C undergraduate’s home last October and attempting to remove the sleeping woman’s underwear, according to police.

Clyde Williams, 49, was charged with one count of home invasion Friday and is being held without bail. If convicted, he will serve a mandatory life sentence, due to two previous felony convictions for attempted murder and armed robbery.

On October 2, 2008, the female student woke up around 2 a.m. to find a man in her bed, trying to remove her underwear, according to State’s Attorney spokesman Andy Conklin. The woman, who lives on 5429 Woodlawn Avenue, began to scream before the man muffled her with a pillow.

The two struggled, but the woman was able to break free and run into her roommate’s bedroom. The roommates locked the door and fled to a third bedroom, where they called police.

The burglar fled as soon as the victim locked the door, but left behind a sweatshirt. That shirt, police said, contained DNA evidence linking Williams to the crime.

UCPD responded to the call and recorded a burglary charge in their logbooks, but did not mention the attempt to undress the victim.  “Woman awoke to find a man in her room. Man fled the apartment,” the log read.

University spokesman Steve Kloehn said the UCPD log “accurately summarize[d] the information available to UCPD at that time,” but that he could not release further information.
