A small fire at 1:06 p.m. on Tuesday forced the evacuation of the Franklin Mclean Memorial Research Institute, a building in the Medical Center on 58th and Ellis.
The fire was ignited by embers that fell into a seventh-floor storage space due to work being done on the roof, according to Fire Department spokesman Quention Curtis. Billowing smoke forced the evacuation. No one was hurt.
Fire and police departments responded by shutting down Ellis between 59th and 57th Street and clearing the building. The evacuation lasted for just over an hour, according to Medical Center spokesman John Easton.
Easton said nothing of value was damaged and that no research was affected by the fire.
