Hazmat Team Called to 53rd After Man Found Dead

Paramedics noticed a strong smell coming from the apartment, and several residents were evacuated from the building.

A man was found dead early Wednesday morning in his apartment near 53rd Street and South Woodlawn Avenue.

Officials issued a Level 2 hazardous materials alert, according to a Chicago Police Department (CPD) spokesperson. The investigation is ongoing.

Paramedics noticed a strong smell coming from the apartment, and several residents were evacuated from the building.

The response team included firefighters and the CPD Bomb and Arson Unit. Several bags of evidence were collected from the apartment.

The man was identified as Zackary Padove, a 25-year-old veterinary technician at Hyde Park Animal Clinic. His mother found him unresponsive in their shared apartment shortly after 2 a.m.

According to DNAInfo, Padove was interested in homebrewing and cooking fermented foods in his home.
